UCI Farm School
The UCI Farm School is a tiny elementary school located on the grounds of the University which adopts an remarkably unique approach to education. There are about 7 children per grade and only two schoolrooms. Grades K – 2 are taught in the Little Kids house and 3 – 6 in the Big Kids house. Teachers adapt their style of teaching to fit a child’s needs instead of the other way around, and the older children in the schoolroom are encouraged to teach the younger ones. Children progress at their own pace, and no homework is given for the first 3 years as the teachers take full responsibility to ensure that each child is learning needed material during class time. Most remarkable to me is the development of self-sufficiency and self esteem in Farm School children. Playground rules are made and enforced by the older children. Children are encouraged to learn their own strengths, and actually run part of the school day themselves. One mother told me about her child, who had been severely taunted by neighborhood children and responded by telling his mother “I know I’m a little different and that’s OK.” Wow! What a gift to give a child.
