I fully support school music programs. Students who study music seem to do better in school, and they develop a creative outlet and learn how to express themselves better. Ms Waggoner was NOT teaching students about opera. She was obviously advancing an agenda. I think that subjects like abortion and suicide should be discussed at home. Ms Waggoner was hired as a music teacher. She needs to leave her social agenda at her house in the morining.

Ms. Waggoner's case illustrates that ignorance so often leads to disastrous conclusions. Anyone who is familiar with the opera, Faust, will know that it is a Christian morality tale. Faust makes a bargain with the devil, but in the end he is damned for it. Marguerite, the young woman Faust deceives, chooses virtue and is rewarded by being accepted into heaven. I guess Ms. Waggoner should have started by educating the school board about opera before she began with her students.

I am an opera singer, republican and strong Christian believer. You should learn the story of Faust before you say things that obviously show your lack of knowledge in the subject. She was trying to introduce children to opera, no matter what you try to convince yourself of. Tressa is a trained Opera singer, who retired so she could do things like focus on her two children. She had hired Opera Colorado to come in and sing a children’s program. She decided to first show the children what opera is before Opera Colorado showed up. Just like the few parents in Bennett, you have a knee jerk reaction to hearing that the Devil, Suicide, and Abortion are in the story. First off, the Devil is portrayed just as he is, Evil and someone never to be trusted or followed. Secondly the suicide is only hinted at. At the beginning of the story Faust is very depressed over a wasted life, mentions that he wishes his life was over and then the Devil appears to get him to sell his soul to him. Thirdly, there is no abortion whatsoever!!! Faust is a classic that has been around for over 150 years. The story was used by pastors and priests for years to teach lessons about the dangers of giving your life over to pleasure and not living for God. - Of anything, I was surprised that some parents would think that the subject is too religious, not the other way around! And now to quote something I just read... "They insist because the Devil is a character and because the subject of suicide is mentioned that the opera endorses Satanism and suicide. The Bible is filled with rape, adultery and murder. It hardly endorses rape adultery and suicide. Now if you want to discuss if the subject matter might be a little grown up for 1st 2nd and 3rd graders, then that is something else. But if you discuss that, you might have to start discussing if Hansel and Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood might be too violent... Thank you

It is clear that Bennett is the laughing point of all music educators and quite frankly the U.S. No superintendent with such ignorance of course subject should be allowed to remain in his job, especially when one bends so easily when confronted with an irrational angry town mob! I see double standards and inconsistency here on all sides - while Ms. Waggoner rightly defends her showing of segments of the opera video, some parents defend her while others object. Those who are objecting now seem to have been silent at Christmas time when not even one carol was sung, even in the name of so-called "diversity". How could they be correctly labelled as Christians in the news articles? Also, her statement that she wasn't given any protocol about the holiday program won't wash. There have to be old school programs around, and she could certainly have asked or just stepped out then and put in some carols. Many are excellent music. If diversity is right now, it was right then. Of course, it’s easy to be for diversity when you get to define it.

Plan for success in public education: Fire the teachers who care.

Where did we ever reach the point in this country where good teachers are thrown out on their ears so flippantly? We the people seem to have no problem with our children suffering under teachers who don't care enough to ever do anything controversial, who play it by the book but could care less about instilling any passion for the subjects they teach. These teachers are never criticised, never punished, and they are responsible for negative attitudes towards their subjects that can last a lifetime. Teachers who are passionate tend to be passionately wrong at times - and when they cross the line time after time and consistently show no respect for other points of view they should certainly be punished. But as far as I can tell, this teacher was not barraging her students with inappropriate material on a consistent basis. Why take such drastic, inappropriate action against her? What has she done that will cause lasting harm to her students? I am an educator and musician as well as a Christian, and I personally think the story of Faust may not be appropriate for elementary school ages. Were I the administrator I would want some restraint shown when exploring the adult-oriented world of Opera with children, and I would ask this teacher to stick to Opera material on a more child-friendly subject. But despite my view, I think it is just lunacy for a school board to so quickly dismiss an instructor on such a trivial basis. I strongly condemn their rash and inappropriate action, and I deeply regret the loss suffered by her students and the community of Bennett, Colorado if her removal becomes permanent.

She showed her students a 12-minute segment from a children's video she checked out of the school library, "Who's Afraid of Opera?", to introduce them to the concept. The segment included scenes from "Faust", which uses sock puppets to tell the story about how a man suffers when he sells his soul to the devil. Parents accused the teacher, a singer who has issued two Christian music albums, of being anti-Christian and a devil worshiper. "I think [the video] glorifies Satan in some way," said one parent. Waggoner was suspended, and the school board ruled that Waggoner would not be allowed to return to the classroom. It also canceled the opera performance. "DO WE LOOK LIKE BUMPKINS?" asked a cringing Town Board member, Rich Pulliam. (Rocky Mountain News, Denver Post) ...Heck no! You'll have to claw your way up several levels to get up as far as "bumpkins".

It would seem that the school board were obviously never taught by an educator who prized culture, enlightenment and TRUE christian values as Ms Waggoner does. It is just unfortunate that the children of this school may grow up as ignorant, reactionary, fearful and intolerant as the members of the school board. The loss of Ms Waggoner to the school is a loss for US culture and standing in the world.

Mr. Bennett, I can see your point since you come from a backward area and anything different from your norm is a scary thing, but instead of firing a teacher for adding something different for her class (mainly opera) why not learn about the subject first? Did you even look at the tape she showed her students? Have you any knowledge about the story of Faust and the Devil? Evidently not since it shows the pain and hardships of a man who sold his soul to the Devil. As far as abortion and suicide are concerned, they are all right outside your door along with a whole lot of other things that are much worse. Because opera is sometimes based on tragedy, which at times is based on actual events, of course it should be shown to our younger generation. Do you actually think that there was a real Faust who sold his soul? I hope not. This is a story to scare people from the Devil, not to glorify him. Music in all its shapes and forms tells stories. If you had any idea about what some people say Bob Dylan was trying to say in some of his songs you would really start a panic. Music tells stories of pain as well as joy. It tells of good and bad. But if you and the rest of the others behind this idiocy think someone is a Devil worshiper for bringing a classic opera story to her students, well I would have to ask if you burn witches in your town as well. If I was this teacher I would be employing council to immediately sue the pants, and shirt, off the whole school system along with anyone else who was stupid enough to slander or cause defamation of character. I read that your city wants a bigger boardroom. Well I would save that money for the lawsuit to come. Everyone has a right to their opinion, but not when it will ruin someone’s life and livelihood. I hope reason will step in and change the minds of those in your town that think the way you do, unfortunately, common sense is not very common.
