Band
I believe the band program is too demanding on the student's time. Practices are in the evening from 6pm to 8:30pm making it very difficult to get the student there, provide dinner, and allow the student time to do homework. Additionally, the students spend up to 30 hours a week on band between classes, practice, football games and band competition. All of this time is counted toward the student's grade according to the band teacher. Now the students are receiving writing requirements in band which put additional demands on their time. My daughter loves band but finds it difficult to keep up with all her requirements due to the very time consuming band schedule. If practice was immediately after school vice at 6pm, at least a working family could plan dinner and take care of the other children in the home. Additionally, extracurricular activities such as competition should be voluntary. The student's grade should not be held over their head.

Band
I marched in the band 3 years at South View High school. If I thought it was too demanding, I wouldn't have been there. Doing what you love to do takes that time and sacrifice to be good. We only practiced twice a week, because that's just how we were. I also marched 3 years in college. Which we practice everday, and practice sometimes does not end unil 1:30 A.M. It's called SACRIFICE. In high school, I was in the band, and loved it! I was also apart of a working family. But, I had a car to drive myself back and forth to practice. I also maintained and graduated with a 3.4 GPA. It can be done, but it takes focus a dedication. You sound like a parent. you think it may be too demanding, but it's honestly not up to parents to decide if band is taking up too much time. It's up to your daughter. Now if you want to hinder your child from doing what she likes than so be it. But you will regret it. Marching Band was a wonderful experience. And my parents loved the band! They went to every game to see me play! If she can keep up, let her. If she can't, let her decide if she can't.
