Would you be interested in talking with me about serving families impacted by addictions?
I am opening up a private practice as a substance abuse therapist with a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Vanderbilt. More importantly, I know about the problem and solutions through personal experience, having grown up in an alcoholic family. My parents received help in Nashville from Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon. After my father died with more than 12 years of sobriety, my mother Ginny Alston opened up a family program at Cumberland Heights where she worked until she was 83.
My work as a professional in the field of addictions has given me contacts throughout the state--going back to 1970 when I was assistant director of Memphis House, one of the first drug rehab centers in the state. In the 1990’s in Nashville, I was director of the Family Program at a vet center focusing on the needs of Vietnam Veterans. Now I work as a therapist at Cornerstone of Recovery in Alcoa, having moved to Gatlinburg in 1997.
Having been a reporter for The Mountain Press (1999-2000) I have talked to many professionals such as yourself who have said that we indeed have an addiction problem as evidenced by low productivity, absenteeism, health problems, school problems,, domestic violence, homicide, suicides—just to name a few ways addiction manifests.
Such a baffling set of problems needs a team approach. As a therapist I will need to get help from others and also to be of service to other professionals such as clergy, judges, law enforcement professionals and others.
My work is simple: breaking through the walls of guilt, shame and victimization. I do that by helping people tell their story. I use a spiritually oriented approach and urge my clients to commit themselves to working on these issues through the spiritual tenants a of A.A., NA (narcotics) and Al-Anon (for spouses and other family members)
